Kitchen of the Week: A Soothing Gray-and-White Open Concept-Plain White Kitchen Cabinets
When a young couple purchased their modern Craftsman-style home in Georgetown, Texas, they knew they would need to give the dated kitchen — with its awkward peninsula — and an adjacent living room a complete overhaul. Plain White Kitchen Cabinets The couple, who have three sons, needed a more user-friendly space and asked designer Matt Tsang to help them create an open kitchen with better flow that now includes an eye-catching backsplash, natural elements and mixed metals for warmth and depth.
Kitchen at a Glance
Who lives here: A couple and their three sons
Location: Georgetown, Texas
Size: 285 square feet (26 square meters)
Designer: Matt Tsang of M. Walter Design
BEFORE: Plain White Kitchen Cabinets The existing kitchen underperformed with reddish textured walls, a yellow ceiling and a vinyl floor. An awkwardly positioned peninsula and pony wall separated the kitchen from an adjacent living room.
What’s more, Plain White Kitchen Cabinets an oversize breakfast nook in the far corner took up space that could have been better used. “With the height of the space, the kitchen itself felt heavy and very crowded,” Tsang says.
AFTER: Plain White Kitchen Cabinets Tsang demolished the previous kitchen, pantry and laundry area to create a more efficient floor plan. Removing the peninsula and pony wall allowed him to extend the kitchen to the former breakfast nook and open it more to the living room.
A new 10-foot wide center island includes a farmhouse sink with a brushed nickel pull-down faucet, wood-and-steel bar stools, and a microwave and dishwasher on the backside across from the cooking area. “The island had to be very functional,” he says. “As a space to prepare food, Plain White Kitchen Cabinets act as a divider between the kitchen and living room, and also be a place for eating.”
The updated color palette includes light gray walls, a white ceiling and a beautiful tile backsplash in a soft sea-glass hue. The base of the island has a rich gray color that helps anchor the room. “We went with lighter tones to maximize and brighten the space, Plain White Kitchen Cabinets and used a darker gray on the island so the kitchen didn’t feel so washed out,” Tsang says.
A wood-look porcelain tile floor offers durability and warm tones. Plain White Kitchen Cabinets The tile extends into the living room, which was previously carpeted.

White-painted maple cabinets with flat-panel Shaker-style doors and flat drawer fronts offer a clean and current look, Plain White Kitchen Cabinets and go all the way to the ceiling to establish a feeling of height and to maximize storage. The cabinets have brushed brass knobs that provide contrast to stainless steel appliances. “The brass knobs added a glam warmth to the space, and they work perfectly with the backsplash,” Tsang says. “Adding that detail helps the room avoid feeling flat with all those cabinets on the back wall.”
Three flush-mount pendant lights with white linen drum shades and a touch of brass provide illumination above the island and allow the eye-catching backsplash to shine.

The backsplash has picket-shaped tiles set in a braided pattern. “With everything being linear in this kitchen, I wanted a backsplash that brought movement to the space,” Plain White Kitchen Cabinets Tsang says. “It draws your eye up, and the tiles that read like falling leaves feel like they’re swimming across the back of the room.”

The cooktop and hood, Plain White Kitchen Cabinets along with all the major appliances, were purchased from the same manufacturer. “The homeowners wanted to maintain the same brand throughout,” he says. “We went with a minimal hood to leave as much surface area of the backsplash as visual as possible.”
BEFORE: This photo taken from the old living room shows how the peninsula and pony wall cut off the circulation and traffic flow between the kitchen and living room, Plain White Kitchen Cabinets and shows the old pantry and the laundry area (seen at the back right) that was relocated upstairs. The dining room sits to the far right.
AFTER: Plain White Kitchen Cabinets By removing the peninsula and pony wall and including the center island, the kitchen and living room now enjoy a stronger connection and better circulation.
Bringing in a wall the kitchen shared with the adjoining dining room gave more space to the dining area and better definition for the kitchen. Plain White Kitchen Cabinets Relocating the laundry upstairs allowed space for a large stainless steel side-by-side refrigerator and freezer and electric wall ovens. Plain White Kitchen Cabinets A pantry cabinet sits to the left of the refrigerator for user-friendly storage of dry goods, with upper cabinets on top for storage of special occasion and seasonal items.
The updated living room’s style is transitional, with two brown leather club chairs, Plain White Kitchen Cabinets a gray sofa, a brass coffee table with oval frame and claw feet, and a handwoven gray area rug. “It’s such an open concept, the spaces had to really play off one another,” Tsang says. “They’re now truly the heart of the home.”

BEFORE: The carpeted living room had the same rustic colors as the old kitchen, Plain White Kitchen Cabinets a dated ceiling fan and a fireplace with brick surround.
AFTER: Plain White Kitchen Cabinets Removing the carpet and updating the fireplace surround with hexagonal marble mosaic tiles gave the room a fresher and modern-day look. “Designing with both form and function in mind is key,” Tsang says. “This makeover improves how the whole house flows.”
