Built in the 1950s, this house was in need of a substantial redo. Like many homes from that era, it was compartmentalized and split into small rooms. “The owners wanted to open the house up, to make it light and bright and just more fun,” says interior designer Jenny Baines. This included Custom Kitchens opening the existing small galley kitchen to the dining area and family room, and designing a new entry. "Photos by Chris Hurtt For behind the range, Baines chose glass tile that matches the color of the mahogany paneling. Along with the lacquer cabinet boxes, the tiles help bounce the light around. BEFORE: A wall divided the kitchen from the dining space and living room. The sofa in the photo below is in the same place. Jenny Baines, Jennifer Baines InteriorsAFTER: In addition to the mahogany paneling, this Angela Adams rug the owners already had drove the color scheme. “These clients are definitely not afraid of color, and wanted to use it to make their house more fun,” Baines says. BEFORE: The kitchen was a dark and cramped galley, cut off from the rest of the house. Jenny Baines, Jennifer Baines InteriorsJenny Baines, Jennifer Baines InteriorsAFTER: The island was larger Custom Kitchens than a full sheet of the bamboo. Rather than trying to match it up and pretend there wasn’t a seam where there obviously was one, they highlighted the places where the sheets met with these dark joints. “The joints pull in the dark color of the mahogany; it turned a potential design negative into a positive,” Baines says. The contractor used the leftover wood to make a matching bamboo cutting board. These “before” and “after” plans will help you understand the new configuration. Here’s the plan before. And here it is after. Before PhotoBEFORE: You may have noted the entry area in the “before” plan. Here it Custom Kitchens is; the door on the right leads into the kitchen. As part of the renovations, the entry was moved, and sliding doors were added next to the dining table to let in more light and add another access point to the outside.Jenny Baines, Jennifer Baines InteriorsJust off the kitchen is the new entryway, where wallpaper from Flavor Paper welcomes visitors with bright color, foreshadowing the home’s playful spirit. A bamboo bench ties the space to the kitchen. Cubbies underneath for shoes and above for other items keep the area uncluttered." Storage is on everyone’s mind when creating a kitchen. But when smartly planned, storage can do Custom Kitchens a lot more than store your dishes, cookware and food. A multipurpose storage wall can free up room for an airier design that allows for a large island with plenty of work and eating space. These three kitchens show how it’s done. "1. Rustic and Roomy Splurges and savings: “Plumbing fixtures were kept simple,” Rehkamp Larson says. “We splurged on hiring an artisan to create and apply a custom finish for the wood walls and ceiling. It is, satisfyingly, both Custom Kitchens rustic and refined.” 2. Contemporary and Comfortable “Uh-oh” moment: Architects Pam Chandler and Patrick Ousey had to transform four penthouse units into one single unit. But the building’s mechanical systems were existing, and the plumbing locations had to be reused to not disturb the condo owners below. The kitchen is where two adjacent master bathrooms were once located. “It was like a huge puzzle,” Ousey says. “At every turn we were faced with an existing condition that needed to Custom Kitchens be addressed, either deciding to reuse, cap off or relocate as needed.” 3. Modern and Multifunctional"
